History of the Stevenage Community Trust

The Stevenage Community Trust was formed in 1990 from an idea by the then Mayor of Stevenage, Councillor Hilda Lawrence. It is based on a concept of Community Foundation schemes that have been running for almost 50 years in the United States.

Many of the major businesses in Stevenage at the time were involved, and over 20 years the Trust has retained founder members Astrium Ltd, MBDA (UK) Ltd and Stevenage Borough Council and also gained new Patrons such as The Follet Trust and Streets Chartered Accounts, as well as over 50 local business, community groups and personal members along the way.  Our Patron is Lord Cobbold, President Barry Norman and our current Chair of Trustees is Ken Follett.

The Trust is unusual in the fact that it is a small organisation but it is locally based with all the local knowledge and contacts. This was how it was always planned to be and it has worked really well.

The Trust has given out over £770,000 in grants since it started, as well as building up an endowment for the future.
