History of the Stevenage Community Trust
The Stevenage Community Trust was formed in 1990 from an idea by the then Mayor of Stevenage, Councillor Hilda Lawrence. It is based on a concept of Community Foundation schemes that have been running for almost 50 years in the United States.
Many of the major businesses at the time were involved at the very beginning of the Trust and 12 years on the Trust has retained its Founder Members as well as gaining many new members along the way.
It is unusual in the fact that it is a small organisation but it is locally based with all the local knowledge and contacts. This was how it was always planned to be and it has worked really well.
The Trust has given out over £600,000 in grants since it started, as well as building up an endowment for the future.
Stevenage Borough Council supports the organisation as the current Mayor always adopts the Trust as one of the charities for the year. In addition, the Trust has formed a partnership with Stevenage Borough Council through the Partners for Giving Fund where we offer matched funding for certain projects
